Who Are Dylan Efron’s Parents? A Look at the Efron Family Tree

Dylan Efron's Parents & Family: His Mom, Dad, and Siblings

Step into the bustling, loving world of the Efron family, and you’ll find a story just as engaging as any Hollywood plot. At the center of it is Dylan Efron, who you might know as Zac Efron‘s brother, a reality show winner, or the guy currently lighting up the dance floor on Dancing with the Stars. But behind the spotlight is a tight-knit clan with a history of support, a few surprises, and a whole lot of brotherly love. Their tale involves childhood dreams, unexpected second acts, and the unique bond between siblings, both older and much, much younger.

From California Roots to a Global Stage

The story of Dylan Efron’s family begins with his parents, David Efron, 61, and Starla Baskett, 76. The pair first connected not on a movie set, but while working at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in California. His father, David, was an electrical engineer, and his mother, Starla, worked as a secretary. Together, they built a home and raised their two sons, Zac and Dylan, in San Luis Obispo, California.

Dylan, whose full name is Nicholas Dylan Harrison Efron, was named because his mother, a self-described “big hippie,” was a huge fan of singer Bob Dylan. He started going by his middle name after a funny childhood moment in first grade when he couldn’t figure out how to spell “Nicholas.” Though David and Starla’s marriage ended in divorce in 2016 after nearly three decades together, the dad and mom have remained a united front in supporting their children’s endeavors, both proudly standing together when Zac received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023.

On the topic of ethnicity and background, the Efron family has Jewish heritage originating from their paternal grandfather. Zac Efron has described himself as Jewish, though he was raised agnostically. This reflects their cultural roots, even if they didn’t actively practice religion during the boys’ childhood.

The Efron Sibling Squad: From Big Brothers to Little Sisters

Dylan Efron’s place in the family is right in the middle of a unique sibling lineup. His older brother is, of course, actor Zac Efron, who is five years his senior. The two weren’t always the close duo they are today. Dylan once described their childhood relationship as “combative,” with lots of fighting because they were “into different things.” Everything changed after Dylan graduated from California Polytechnic State University with a degree in economics. Zac took his younger brother under his wing, letting him live in his Los Angeles home.

“He really became that older brother,” Dylan shared, “and that’s when I would say we grew closer than ever. Our relationship was something that developed more as we both became adults and stopped fighting so much.” This adult friendship evolved into a professional partnership, with Dylan working as a producer on Zac’s Netflix series Down to Earth with Zac Efron and appearing in adventure segments on his YouTube channel.

The family expanded in a delightful surprise for the two brothers when their father, David, remarried and had two more children with his second wife, Jenny. This gave Dylan and Zac two much younger half-siblings: a sister, Olivia, who was born on Christmas Day in 2019, and a brother, Henry, who was born sometime after.

At 33, Dylan Efron has embraced his role as a big brother with enthusiasm, even though there’s a 27-year age gap with Olivia. He frequently visits them, joking that he’s probably the “favorite” sibling since he sees them more often. He even featured Olivia in a sweet rehearsal package for Dancing with the Stars, where he dedicated a dance to her. Dylan has said that bonding with his little sister has been so meaningful that it’s opened his eyes to the idea of being a “girl dad” himself one day.

So, while the Efron family tree has grown and changed over the years, its roots in support and love have stayed firmly planted. From parents who drove hours for auditions to brothers who became roommates and business partners, and now to a new generation of young siblings, their foundation is clearly strong. It’s this very normal, sometimes messy, but always loyal dynamic that has undoubtedly helped Dylan confidently step out and build his own remarkable path in the world.
