Eliud Kipchoge became the first man in history to complete a marathon in under two hours

On 12th October 2019, Eliud Kipchoge ran a 26.2 miles marathon in an unbelievable 1 hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds. To put this into perspective, it's equivalent to running 100m every 17 seconds, 422 times in a row.

Following the achievement of this remarkable feat in the 1:59 Ineos Challenge in Vienna, Kipchoge said:

I am feeling good. After Roger Bannister in 1954 it took another 63 years, I tried and I did not get it - 65 years, I am the first man - I want to inspire many people, that no human is limited.

Kipchoge then displayed his appreciation for the 41 pacemakers who he believes are among the 'best athletes in the world'. He added,

I can say thank you to them, I appreciate them for accepting and together we made history on this one.

Since this was an open competition, however, he did not earn himself a world record. His fans need not be disheartened though, since Kipchoge already holds a world record from his incredible performance in the Berlin marathon (September 16, 2018) which he completed at 2:01:39.
