Daniel Radcliffe Reveals How He Broke Countless Wands During Filming of Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe addresses the rumors he broke several wands while filming.

Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe talked about the long-running speculations he broke dozens of wands and numerous glasses while shooting the fantasy movie series, revealing precisely what happened to the props.

While attempting some extremely spicy hot wings for the First We Feast’s YouTube show Hot Ones, the star – who led as Harry in all eight Potter films – disclosed while he didn’t ruin as many props as the news claimed, he actually wrecked a few wands because he used them as musical pieces of equipment in between.

He said,

The wands I definitely broke a lot because I would just like, drum on my legs with it all the time and do that incessantly. So, probably once every three or four weeks, it would just weaken to the point where it snapped.

The actor continued,

And then I would say I was very sorry to the prop master and he would give me a look like, ‘Please stop drumming.’ They were very, very sweet with us and tolerated more than I hope they would from an adult actor.

As for Harry’s famous glasses, he broke a few pairs of them but said that rumors of how many he had destroyed were “massively” inflated.

He said,

I definitely didn’t break the glasses that often at all, I don’t think.

The actor even shared his favorite and least favorite food moments when shooting the film series, claiming he really liked creating the “crazy banquet scenes” at Hogwarts because he only had to pile food onto his dish and dive in.

Speaking of his least favorite food moment, Radcliffe revealed:

In one of the films, I had to eat gillyweed that I think was black liquorice lace. It was designed to look like a kind of underwater seaweed plant that I could then shovel down my throat.

The 31-year-old star added,

That was pretty gross. I remember by like the third or fourth take I was like, ‘Oh, how many more of these are we going to do?’

Radcliffe wasn’t the only star who triggered a little bit of chaos on the Potter set, as his co-star Rupert Grint, who starred as Harry’s closest mate Ron Weasley, recently revealed he sometimes couldn’t resist laughing when shooting serious scenes – including Dumbledore’s tragic funeral.

Grint said,

For some reason, I found that absolutely hilarious. And yeah, once you start laughing, it’s very hard to stop.

Grint also stated how he and Daniel Radcliffe had to shoot the train carriage scene from the first movie individually since they couldn’t make eye contact without butchering the scene.
