Meanwhile, Christina Applegate was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in August 2021, while filming Dead to Me’s third and final season. MS is a neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), resulting in problems with muscular control and strength, vision, balance, sensation, and thinking. Numbness, tremor, and lack of coordination are some of the symptoms. It is different in each case, with some people having minimal issues and others becoming severely incapacitated.
At that period, Dead to Me suspended production after Christina Applegate’s diagnosis to allow her to seek treatment. And when the drama finally ended in November 2022, the actress spoke to Variety about her future career, stating that concluding the show with her symptoms was “as hard as you would possibly think it would be.” Later, she remarked on her acting career, saying,
It’s about finding what I’m capable of doing . I’m so new in this right now. It takes time to kind of figure out this disease, and figure out what’s bringing on symptoms. I’m just a newbie to all of this. So I’m trying to figure it out — and I’m also in mourning for the person who I was. I have to find a place that’s as loving as my set was, where they won’t think I’m a diva by saying, ‘Hey, I can only work five hours.’
Later, Christina Applegate went on to explain that she was seeking a job that would allow her to work five hours a day if she wasn’t the star, and that she might not be able to star in anything in the future. She added, “There’s no way I could do the work that I just came off again. I mean, it was so hard.”
