Mitch Johnson: Wife Jessica, Their Four Children, and the San Antonio Spurs’ New Era

Mitch Johnson's Wife and Kids: Meet His Family and Children

When the San Antonio Spurs named Mitch Johnson their 19th head coach on May 2, 2025, it marked the end of a legendary era and the start of a new chapter for the franchise. Johnson stepped into the shoes of Gregg Popovich, who transitioned to president of basketball operations after a remarkable 29 seasons on the bench. But for the 38-year-old coach, the promotion was the culmination of nearly a decade of hard work within the Spurs organization, a journey that began in the G League and eventually saw him take the reins after Popovich suffered a stroke early in the 2024-25 season.

While his rise to the top of the NBA coaching ranks has been well-documented, what is less known is the personal story of the man behind the clipboard. Johnson is not just a basketball strategist but also a husband and father. Balancing the intense pressure of leading a professional basketball team with family life presents its own unique challenges, yet it’s a responsibility he seems to embrace with the same poise he displays on the sidelines.

Family: Wife Jessica and Four Children

Away from the bright lights of the NBA, Mitch Johnson is a dedicated family man. He is married to his wife, Jessica, with whom he shares four kids: Tasia, Tatum, Johnnie, and Jameson. While the couple generally keeps their family life out of the public eye, it is clear that Jessica and their children are Johnson’s biggest priority and a constant source of support.

Despite his demanding schedule, Johnson makes a concerted effort to carve out quality time. One memorable example came during the All-Star break in February 2025, when he traded the basketball court for a different kind of thrill ride. Looking for a respite from the stress of his interim coaching duties, Johnson took his wife and four kids on a trip to Disneyland, a move that surprised even his own players. The getaway offered a rare glimpse into the coach’s ability to unplug from the game and refocus on what matters most—his family.

From the G League to the Head Coach Position

Johnson’s path to the head coaching chair was forged in the Spurs’ developmental system. He first joined the organization in 2016 as an assistant coach for the Austin Spurs, the franchise’s G League affiliate, and helped guide the team to a championship in 2018. His steady progression led him to the NBA bench as an assistant under Popovich in 2019, and he was later promoted to a front-of-the-bench role.

Through it all, he has carried a deep-rooted basketball pedigree. Johnson is the son of 12-year NBA veteran John Johnson, a 1979 NBA champion with the Seattle SuperSonics. This lineage gave him a unique education in the game from an early age. Now, as the head coach of one of the NBA’s most storied franchises, Mitch Johnson is forging his own legacy in San Antonio, while building a strong foundation for his four children right alongside him.
