Julian Sands was last seen on the Baldy Bowl Trail, which climbs 3,900 feet (1,200 m) over 4.5 miles (7.2 km) to the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains. According to reports, there were indications of avalanches in the area. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department reported,

On 14 April, Henry Sands told The Times that he was realistic about the impact of the weather conditions over the last three months on the search, in light of the 40-year record snowfall in California, and that he looked forward to the search resuming as the weather improved, and that the search for his father continues.
Five months after Sands went missing, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department issued an official community Nixle advisory and update on June 19, 2023, claiming that more than 80 search and rescue members had descended into isolated areas around Mount Baldy to hunt for Sands on June 17, 2023. According to the alert, there have been eight formal search expeditions for Sands since January, totaling over 500 volunteer search hours.
