The name Lucas Trejo has become synonymous with a grief so profound that it has transcended the world of football. He is an Argentine professional soccer player, a veteran defender who has built a career across the Americas. However, the world now knows him not for his performances on the pitch, but for the devastating personal tragedy that has struck his family in Venezuela.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Trejo has lost his wife and two young children. They were victims of the catastrophic twin earthquakes that ravaged Venezuela, leaving a trail of destruction and thousands of casualties. The 38-year-old footballer, who was away with his team in Caracas, embarked on a desperate, days-long search that ultimately ended in the confirmation of his worst fears.

A Family Lost to Tragedy
Lucas Trejo was married to Yanina Maranella, and together they had two children: a son named Aaron and a daughter named Ainhoa. The family resided in an apartment building in the Playa Grande area of La Guaira, Venezuela. When the powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck on Wednesday, their building collapsed completely.
At the time of the disaster, Trejo was with his club, Club Sport Marítimo de La Guaira, preparing for a match in Caracas. Unable to contact his family, he immediately traveled to the disaster zone. His anguish was palpable as he took to social media, writing, “Our building in Playa Grande collapsed. I don’t know anything about my family” and pleading, “Please pray for them… I want to believe they weren’t there”.

What followed was a harrowing 74-hour search. Trejo, alongside his father and brother who had flown in from Argentina, joined firefighters and volunteers in sifting through the rubble with their bare hands. The football world watched and hoped, but on Saturday night, the search ended in tragedy. The bodies of Yanina, Aaron, and Ainhoa were recovered from the debris.
The devastating news was confirmed by his club, Deportivo La Guaira, and by a family friend and fellow footballer, Edson Tortolero. In a social media post, Tortolero announced, “We inform all the people of Venezuela and Argentina that the bodies of Lucas Trejo’s family members have been found lifeless”.
