Mathieu Van Der Poel Survives a Late Crash to Win the World Road Race Championship!

Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands won the 168-mile road race at the World Cycling Championships after overcoming a mishap with 10 miles to go. The 28-year-old cyclist earned his first senior global road cycling medal a decade after winning the junior world crown.

He had roughly a 35-second advantage when he slid all the way across a wet, two-lane road in Glasgow, Scotland, on Aug 6. For a brief period, he mistook the rainbow jersey for lost. He later explained,

If this cost me the world title, I would have not slept for a couple of days. I was pretty pissed at myself. It’s not that I was taking risks in my opinion. I just had to stay on the bike. I didn’t manage of course.

As we can see, Van der Poel's jersey ripped over his right armpit and thigh, his right elbow scraped red, and something hanging from a ruined right shoe backed away. After more than six hours in the saddle, he won by 97 seconds over his competitor van Aert. Tadej Pogacar took bronze over Mads Pedersen. In 11th place, Neilson Powless was the top American.

Van der Poel may be the most adaptable cyclist in the world. He is a five-time world champion in cyclocross, a bronze medalist in mountain biking, and a Tour de France stage winner, as well as one-day race victories in Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, and Paris-Roubaix. However, he explained,

[This world title] was one of the biggest goals I had left. It almost completes my career.

Furthermore, Van der Poel planned to participate only on his mountain bike in his Olympic debut in Tokyo, but he fell on the first lap and had to withdraw. The men's mountain bike race took place two days after the Tokyo road race. The men's road race, which has usually been held on the opening day of medal contention at the Olympics, will be held a week later, five days after the men's mountain biking, during the 2024 Paris Games.
