The first brush with fame for Vuyo Dabula came in 2003 when the actor was hired to appear in the movie Soldiers of the Rock. But after the first acting job, he went away from the movie and TV role for a bit. Being a body development enthusiast and an avid boxing lover, the actor focused a lot of his effort in bettering himself and honing his craft.

Vuyo came back to acting in 2009 when he was hired to be one of the guards of Nelson Mandela in the movie Invictus. Starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon in the role, the movie was nice exposure to stars for the budding South African heartthrob. Soon after the success of the film, the actor went to TV, where he further built a fanbase.

Also, in 2015 the actor was one of the cops in Johannesburg when Iron Man and Hulk were duking it out in the city. Though the role was for a few seconds, it was also a building block to where Vuyo wanted to be in the world of show business. All this learning and exposure over the years led to the actor being hired to lead his first movie.

Vuyo Dabula is Famous for the Role of Tau in the Movie Five Fingers for Marseilles

Five Fingers for Marseilles is similar to the spaghetti western classics of Hollywood, a movie where a cowboy comes to the rescue of a town from evil people. But instead of a white person saving everyone, Tau is the black cowboy who comes to save his old town after years in prison. This is what makes the movie unique, the hero is someone you can agree with or even root for, but you understand what he is doing and why.

Vuyo playing Tau was the reason he shot to fame, the actor and his portrayal of the character was lauded. The movie was also beloved for the themes it played with, but the film was also close to Vuyo, who likened his character to his father. At the time of the movie’s release, Vuyo’s father was dead for about two years, and the actor said his father was like his character in the film, sweet, calm, and rational but could get angry at any moment.

This movie was not only a debut as a leading man for Vuyo, but this also allowed the actor to become one of the most sought after actors in South Africa. The movie also introduced the actor to a whole new audience outside of South Africa, but what could even drive home the international fame of the actor is his role in the Netflix series Queen Sono.

Vuyo Dabula Plays Shandu in the Netflix Series Queen Sono

There is a whole discussion to be had about how the mid-budget movies got killed by Netflix, but there is no denying the impact of the streaming service when it comes to showcasing various cultures and giving voice to artists who would’ve never even gotten a sit down in a traditional studio.

Queen Sono also comes from a unique voice, created by Kagiso Lediga; the show is the first African original series. Shadow was also a South African series, but it was acquired by Netflix instead of them being involved in the making of the show. Queen Sono stars Pearl Thusi, best known for her role in Quantico, the show is filled with African cast and crew.

Queen Sono follows a secret agent of the same name, played by Thusi, who is brash, her own woman, and someone who doesn’t care for authority. Vuyo plays the character of Shandu in the series, and he is the right-hand man of the villain of the series, played by Kate Liquorish. It seems Shandu and Sono had something between them, and now everything is coming to a head. Queen Sono will be available for streaming worldwide on 28 February 2020.

The actor recently shared some pictures of his wife and also some snap of their marriage, but he took them down from Instagram soon after.
