Alasdair Nichol was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and attended Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen to study fine art. Later, he earned a Master's degree from Belfast, Northern Ireland's University of Ulster. He began his career in the auction business in Edinburgh in 1985 and then moved to Glasgow, where he oversaw the first sale of Scottish Contemporary Art at the prestigious Glasgow School of Art. Before relocating to New York as Head of Fine Art in 1997, he first worked at a flagship saleroom in London where he specialized in Modern & Impressionist art.
