Born to parents Dina Burke and Tony Shawkat on 18th April 1989 in Riverside, California, Alia Martine Shawkat is an American actress best known for her role as Maeby Funke in the sitcom Arrested Development.
While her father is from Baghdad, Iraq, her mother, the daughter of Paul Burke carries a mixed ancestry; Irish, Italian and Norwegian. The actress was raised in Palm Springs, California.
Shawkat is not just engrossed into acting, she is a paint lover who's participated in several gallery shows while the actress also likes making music and singing in jazz bars.

Back in May 2017, Alia Shawkat was interviewed by Out about her new movie Paint it Black. The film contained some extremely weird queer overtones. While they were discussing at length on the subject of queer, Shawkat did not even hesitate to jump right ahead and came out.
Shawkat revealed she was a tomboy as a kid and whenever her mom asked her if she was into boys or girls, she was quite clueless as she did not know it yet. She added,
Now I consider myself bisexual, and I think balancing my male and female energies has been a big part of me growing as an actor.
Alia was subsequently asked if working with Portia de Rossi on Arrested Development helped shape her identity. She responded by bringing up Ellen DeGeneres, who she came to know was dating Portia for the first three seasons in the series. She claimed to have known Rossi's previous girlfriend as well. However, the actress stated Portia did not influence her discovering her sexuality.
I think my influences are more from growing up in Los Angeles and being exposed to lots of gay artists.
Shawkat, meanwhile, is striving to learn to use her voice more in the current political climate. Previously, she used to be less outspoken. But now she means to change this.
As a woman, an Arab-American, and a member of the LGBTQ community, I have to use whatever voice I have. There's no more delicacy in being quiet.
Since coming out as bisexual, Alia has largely kept her relationship status to herself. She prefers to be as low-key as possible. It remains to be seen when she decides to embrace a life partner and whether it'll be a husband or a wife.
