They claimed that they had frequently felt like an alien abandoned on Earth and left to muddle their way through life. While they did not identify as nonverbal (a subgroup of autism in which people have difficulty speaking), they did have selective mutism and would lose their capacity to talk when they were overwhelmed.

Hannah Gadsby spoke to The Rolling Stone in an interview published this morning, fresh off the release of their newest Netflix hour, Something Special, in which the introspective Australian comic behind the Emmy-winning 2018 special Nanette addressed their controversial colleague for their influence on the dialogue surrounding trans issues and comedy.
Hannah Gadsby claims that their main criticism of Chappelle isn't that they are disrespectful, boundary-pushing, or unflinching (as they prefer to believe his opponents describe him), but that they have nothing new to say about these subjects. Something Special is based on Gadsby's 2021 marriage to their producer, Jenney Shamash, whom they affectionately refer to as Jenno throughout the performance. (There's a funny scene when Jenney thinks it's a special term of endearment, but they explain that Australians really like shortening phrases and putting the letter o at the end.)
Though everything is framed through the prism of their relationship, we get several glimpses into Gadsby's life, such as their relationship with their parents, how their autism impacts their world and recollections of previous relationships. Their autism isn't the major emphasis of Something Special, but it's always a part of it since it's a part of who they are. They described the person as slappable the first time the couple played the children's game Guess Who because their visage was off-putting.
