Alyson Hannigan hated kissing Jason Segel on HIMYM. Here’s the reason why.
Alyson Hannigan loved and admired her onscreen partner, Jason Segel, on the popular CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, but she completely hated kissing him.
The actress who portrayed Lily Aldrin in the show, admitted locking lips with Segel, who starred as Marshall Eriksen, was almost an unbearable experience for her due to his smoker’s breath.
The American Pie alum told Digital Spy:
I cannot stand cigarette smoke. It’s like kissing an ashtray and he’s trying to be polite by having gum or mints, but it doesn’t help.
She was trying to get Segel to break the habit, she stated, to no avail.

Alyson recalled:
When we started the pilot [for the show] he was like, ‘Get me to stop smoking, I’ll be your best friend.’ So we did this bet where he would owe me $10 every time he had a cigarette. After the first day, he owed me $200.
So he said, ‘I’m just quitting,’ and he quit cold turkey for about a year. It was fantastic but then … he got stressed out and he started smoking again.
Despite his toxic cigarette habit, Hannigan cherished working with Segel and was devasted when How I Met Your Mother came to an end in 2014.
The pair made an appearance together on The Talk in January 2014, and Hannigan cried on live TV at the end of the episode.

Despite the unpleasant habit, Alyson Hannigan always loved working with Jason Segel. She joked:
He’s just such a wonderful guy … I’m getting all—I’m not gonna miss him.
The actress added,
I’m not good at answering this question at all.
Segel then put his hand on her shoulder and said, “Aww, babe.”
Hannigan, as you’d expect, began crying harder, telling the viewers,
I’m on a daytime talk show crying, this isn’t how it was supposed to go!
As the panel questioned Segel what he had missed most from the show and working with Hannigan, she sobbed again at his sweet words.
The Dispatches from Elsewhere lead told US Weekly:
Aly taught me a lot about how to be a man, I gotta say. I was 25 when I took the show. think we’ve all been through a lot personally.
The HIMYM star added,
Aly and I have a lot of scenes together, spend a lot of time together, and she’s always been there to listen to me and give me advice, saw me through hard times and good time.
As he rubbed Hannigan’s shoulder while she sobbed, Segel said he understood a lot from the type of guy he wanted to be with Alyson.
