The second season of one of Netflix’s Welcome to Eden, which is normally left to fight for itself in the murky streaming waters, is jam-packed with additional drama, more action, a longer run-time, and—most importantly—some much-needed answers. The series also brings with it a familiar dose of baggage and all the difficulties the first had been extrapolated out for all to see, even as the reality of what is happening on the island is revealed and the first season’s agreement is recontextualized.
This time, the focus is shifted away from Africa and is primarily on Zoa, Bel, and a small group of other people. As they all gradually come to understand the truth about Eden, they plan a vengeance expedition to kill Astrid and leave this hellish environment. But before that can happen, Ulises is discovered dead, and the youngsters become involved in a murder investigation. While this is going on, Ibon maintains his poker face, but when Astrid sends in the heavy hitters—Danae, Joel, and a whole host of other military personnel—the stakes are unavoidably raised.
Not everyone makes it through the season, and there are many deaths sprinkled throughout that serve to heighten the stakes rather effectively. Undoubtedly, there is a lot more urgency, but as a result, the tone is inconsistent. Midway through, episodes adopt a formulaic style to become darker and more teen-focused. Lots of s*x, kissing, and partying are interspersed with rebellions, covert meetings, and assassination plans. The whiplash effect does nothing good for this series. The other problem of Welcome to Eden, which is its large cast of people, is made worse here.

There are a few flashbacks to the mainland, but the focus is primarily on Brisa, whose Let’s just say that some flashbacks, a la Lost or Yellowjackets, to introduce the characters before they get on the island would have been excellent. It’s unfortunate that despite a slight improvement over the first season, Welcome to Eden season 2 still has the same problems. It’s not the best YA series on Netflix, but it’s also not the worst, making it another rambling, subpar mystery drama.
The suspenseful Spanish thriller (available with English dubbing and subtitles) serves as a timely reminder that what appears ideal on social media is frequently just a front for more sinister realities.
