It tells the story of a troubled Canadian hitchhiker who became famous, albeit briefly, thanks to a viral meme in 2013. Kai Lawrence (née Caleb Lawrence McGillvary) became an overnight sensation after giving a rambling TV interview that was streamed millions of times in just a few weeks. However, things took a tragic turn after his internet fame, and he was convicted of murder in 2019.

Kai claims he was acting in self-defense when he was arrested two months after his fateful interview with Reisbeck. He is currently incarcerated at New Jersey State Prison in Trenton for 57 years.
