However, according to the medical findings on Joseph's body, his injuries were not consistent with being struck in self-defense.
Prosecutors contended that if Kai's account of the previous night was correct, he would not have returned to his abuser's house the next night. Furthermore, they claimed that if he had acted in self-defense, he would not have changed his appearance and fled New Jersey. Kai also did not turn himself in after his status as a murder suspect became public. He was only apprehended a few days after the murder of Joseph Galfy by a Starbucks barista in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
As per People, Kai Lawrence's trial began on April 1, 2019, after nearly six years in prison. The hitchhiker testified in his defense, but his conduct in court nearly had him tossed out. Kai was found guilty of first-degree murder on April 24, 2019. He was sentenced to 57 years in prison on May 30, 2019, which includes the time he had previously spent in prison before his conviction.
