She fearlessly spoke out about how she was mentally and emotionally abused by her former coach Maggie Haney who was suspended for eight years in 2020. Sharing an Instagram post on her experiences, Laurie opened up to the world about the abuse she had been facing for eleven years, how she was shamed all the time for her body, screamed at and always proven wrong.

Following the tragic experience, Laurie Hernandez said she worked to undo this mentality and is now more relaxed. She eats intuitively, focusing on healthy foods and prepping meals as much as she can. She quotes, "If I want more carbs, then my body is clearly asking for more carbs. If I want more protein, my body is asking for more protein,". Along with working on her physical body, the star gymnast is also doing some inward works and has been actively preaching about the importance of mental health.
