After a pretty good high school career, Dillon eventually played football in college as well and set some records on his name. Dillon started all 13 games as a freshman at Boston College in 2017 and set a freshman school record with 1,589 yards on 300 runs and 14 touchdowns. Thanks to all his incredible gameplay, the star footballer won the ACC Rookie of the Year award.
Struck by a bit of bad luck during his Sophomore year, Dillon played in only 10 of 13 games against Temple on September 29, 2018, ankle, as the result of his ankle injury. Despite being hindered by his injury, Dillon still racked up 1,149 total yards and 11 touchdowns, becoming the first athlete in Boston College history to have two seasons of 1,000 yards. After lightning struck early in the game, the First Responder Bowl was declared a no-contest, therefore ending the Eagles' season. He rushed for 33 yards on six carries before the event was called off due to lightning, including a 19-yard touchdown run.
Stepping up to his junior season, on October 26, 2019, in a game against Clemson, Dillon scored his 34th touchdown, a 9-yard rush in the second quarter, tying him with Keith Barnette for the Eagles' career rushing touchdowns record. Then, in the third quarter, Dillon carried for another 9 yards to tie Andre Williams for the most career rushing yards with 3,739 yards.
AJ Dillon stated on December 10, 2019, that he will forego his senior year of eligibility at Boston College and enter the 2020 NFL draft. With 4,382 yards rushing in three seasons, Dillon holds the program's all-time rushing record and is 220 yards shy of the Atlantic Coast Conference lifetime rushing record. He also holds program marks with 38 rushing touchdowns, 40 total touchdowns, and 4,618 all-purpose yards.

The Green Bay Packers selected Dillon with the 62nd overall choice in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft officially beginning his professional football career. On July 1, 2020, he signed a four-year, $5.3 million rookie deal with a $1.4 million signing bonus. On September 13, 2020, he debuted in the NFL with two carries for 14 yards in a Week 1 win over the Minnesota Vikings.
