According to an Ohio Medical Board judgment, Katharine Grawe, commonly known as Dr. Roxy at her practice Roxy Plastic Surgery in Powell, will never be able to practice in Ohio again. Likely, she was also fined $4,500.

Mary Jenkins was previously awarded a $358,000 jury verdict against a Delaware County surgeon who botched her plastic surgery (breast reconstruction operation). After a week-long trial before visiting Judge John F. Bender, a Franklin County Common Pleas jury returned the conviction.

The North Side resident established Christians Overcoming Cancer in 2006 after being diagnosed with breast cancer and losing her job. She noticed that no organizations existed to assist cancer patients suffering financial challenges with day-to-day expenses such as rent and utilities. She estimates that the organization raises roughly $40,000 each year through various fundraisers and pays bills for 20 to 25 persons in active treatment who are in need.
Mary Jenkins’ right breast was removed by surgeons in 2006, but she did not get reconstruction surgery until she met Dr. K. Roxanne Grawe aka Dr. Roxy in 2012. Later, at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s, Dr.Roxy performed an operation in which a flap from Jenkins’ abdomen was taken and utilized to build a right breast. However, the flap died after becoming infected with blood and was removed by Grawe two days later.
According to a pre-trial statement made by Jenkins’ attorney, David Shroyer, Mary Jenkins was left with a gaping hole in her chest that required lengthy wound therapy. She was in a nursing home for four months while the wound healed. Later, in a lawsuit filed in 2014, it was claimed that Dr.Roxy’s efforts to remedy the concerns, which included leech therapy rather than plastic surgery, were professionally irresponsible and fell far short of acceptable medical care standards.
Six of the eight jurors, the bare minimum for a finding, ruled Dr.Roxy responsible for her failure to diagnose and treat the complication. Later, Jenkins was awarded $58,600 in medical bills and $300,000 in non-economic damages by the jury. An Ohio law that bars non-economic damages at $250,000 might lessen the award.
Later, Sabrina Sellers, one of Grawe’s solicitors, said that she couldn’t comment on the damage cap or the likelihood of an appeal because a final entry in the case hadn’t been submitted. At the time, she stated, “Dr. Grawe is an excellent member of the medical community, and we still feel she met the standard of care” However, her attorney, Shroyer, believes her experience should not prevent others from seeking breast reconstruction surgery. She stated,
This is a very rare complication and our claim was that there was a failure to timely treat it. “She should have been in and out of the hospital in a few days.
