Max Strus' collegiate career began at Lewis University. Strus averaged 13.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game as a freshman, starting all 31 games for the Flyers and earning second-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors (GLVC). Strus averaged 20.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game as a sophomore, all-team highs, and was named first-team all-GLVC and honorable mention Division II All-American.
Strus also set school records with 167 free throws made and 666 points scored in a single season, as well as 52 points scored in a game against Northwood University on November 24, 2015. Strus announced after the season that he would be leaving the program to play at the Division I level. Strus had a total of 1,078 points in his two seasons at Lewis.
After considering offers from Butler, Louisville, Oregon, and Xavier, Max Strus was transferred to DePaul for the final two seasons of his eligibility. Strus began his redshirt junior season on the Blue Demons in the starting lineup after sitting out one season due to NCAA transfer rules and led the team with 16.8 points per game.

After going undrafted in the 2019 NBA draft, Max Strus was named to the Boston Celtics Summer League roster. For the Celtics, he averaged 9.8 points per game and shot 45 percent from three. Strus signed a two-way contract with the team on July 22, 2019.
Later, Strus joined the Miami Heat for the NBA Summer League on August 1, 2021, and five days later signed a two-year, $3.5 million contract extension with the Heat. Max scored 31 points against the Chicago Bulls on April 14, 2023, following a loss to the Hawks in the play-in game. He and Jimmy Butler combined for 62 points in a 102-91 win, sending them to the 2023 playoffs despite being one point shy of his career high.
