According to a source, Nastia's anorexia was exacerbated when she retired as she struggled to adjust to life outside of gymnastics and her identity. The condition affected her physical and mental health, causing her to lose weight rapidly and become increasingly isolated. She was barely eating and obsessed with food, and her weight was at an all-time low.

Despite this, she kept her troubles hidden from people around her, assuming she could conquer her eating issue alone. However, it wasn't until Liukin sought help and began counseling that she could begin her road to recovery. Her road to recovery was difficult, but she is grateful for the help she had along the way.

The former artistic gymnast's journey to recovery was not easy, but she is grateful for the support she received along the way. She now works with organizations that aim to destigmatize mental health issues and provide resources for individuals struggling with eating disorders and other mental health challenges.

Nastia Liukin has learned to recognize and challenge her negative thought patterns and develop a healthier relationship with food. She also started to prioritize self-care and engage in activities that brought her joy. In Liukin's case, persistent self-starvation and extreme weight loss resulted in a number of health issues, including malnutrition, muscular atrophy, and hormone abnormalities.

Anorexia's emotional toll was devastating, as Nastia suffered from thoughts of worthlessness and distorted body image. Her obsession with weight and food frequently dominated other parts of her life, causing her to withdraw from friends and family and lose interest in things she formerly enjoyed.

The direct message was sent to Nastia earlier in the day after she posted her early-morning workout routine, which included a visit to her local pilates studio near her home in Dallas, Texas. The question read,

“Do u feel like u r promoting borderline anorexia looking bodies?”

The post came in response to Liukin, who is skinny and fit, snapping a selfie while working out. The criticism evidently resonated with the 5-time Olympic gold medalist, who shared the encounter and answered with a fierce defense. She did not mince words when defending her position for posting sensual body imagery. Liukin wrote on Instagram,

“If taking pictures of my OWN body — a body that won me many Olympics medals, a body that I push each day to get stronger, a body that God gave me — is inherently promoting anorexia, then honestly,we’ve gotten to a place in the world where just BEING is offensive.”

The star continued to explain that she was only being authentic when she posted online.

“This is ME. This is my body. While I’ve always been thin, I’ve not always been strong. I’m proud to say that I am truly stronger now than I’ve ever been. I’m sorry if my body is triggering to you. I don’t believe that I should have to cover it up for fear of being offensive.”

She added that she promotes real, raw, and truth on social media. Finally, she went on to explain that all bodies should be glorified, regardless of shape and size. She wrote all of her love as she ended her message on a note of positivity.
