Selina Wang, 33, Captures Chaos at the White House Shooting While Expecting Her First Child

The chaotic sound of dozens of gunshots suddenly erupted near the White House North Lawn, and one of the people who dropped to the ground was ABC News senior White House correspondent Selina Wang. She had been filming a social media video on her iPhone when the shots rang out, and her phone continued recording as she lay flat on the pavement, capturing the terrifying moment for the world to see. The incident, which occurred on May 23, 2026, sent journalists and staff scrambling for cover and prompted a massive security lockdown of the presidential complex.

Wang, 33, is no stranger to high-pressure situations, but the experience of hearing gunfire while standing in the shadow of the White House was a stark reminder of the dangers that can accompany even routine reporting. As she later wrote on X, the sound was unlike anything she had heard before. The event has thrust her into the spotlight, not just as a journalist, but as a soon-to-be mother who is balancing a demanding career with the anticipation of her first child.

The Chaos on the North Lawn

The shooting unfolded shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time when a 21-year-old man identified as Nasire Best approached a security checkpoint near the White House, pulled a firearm from a bag, and opened fire on Secret Service agents. Agents returned fire, striking the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. A civilian passerby was also seriously injured in the crossfire. At the time, former President Donald Trump was inside the White House attending an emergency security meeting.

Selina Wang was in the middle of recording a social media segment on the North Lawn when she heard what she described as “dozens of gunshots.” In a now-viral post on X, she wrote: “I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots. It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now.”

Video clips from the scene showed Wang dropping to the ground amid shouts of “Get down, get down!” as security officers ordered everyone to leave the area. CBS News reporter Aaron Navarro was also seen ducking and running for cover alongside Wang. Canadian tourist Reed Entrian, who was nearby, told AFP he initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks before realizing the danger. The incident triggered an immediate lockdown, with the National Guard blocking access to the area and journalists ordered to take shelter in the press briefing room.

Born on May 8, 1993, in Richland, Washington, Wang is a graduate of Harvard University and previously worked as a CNN correspondent in Beijing and Tokyo before joining ABC News as senior White House correspondent in August 2023. She is married to Evan Ramsey, whom she met at Harvard when they were both 19 years old. The couple tied the knot in 2019 and, for much of their early relationship, endured long-distance separations as Wang’s career took her around the world.

In April 2026, Selina Wang announced that she was pregnant and expecting her first child, a baby boy. “Journalism has taken me around the world for the last decade, and I’ve loved every part of it,” she told PEOPLE. “But motherhood, I’m told, will be the biggest adventure yet.” As she navigates her pregnancy, Wang continues to cover the White House beat, a role that has now taken on new meaning after the shooting she experienced firsthand. For Wang, the event served as a powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of her work in documenting history as it unfolds.
