Gay was born on August 4, 1970, to a Haitian ethnic family that immigrated to the US in the 1990s. She came from a hardworking family where her mother was a nurse and her father used to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Growing up, her parents were her tutors, and she attended Phillips Exeter Academy and completed her schooling. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, where she studied economics.
