At her mastectomy procedure, Lucas, who is currently an executive at Lifetime, wore matte red lipstick. According to Chalke, wearing lipstick was a daring declaration about how she was treating the illness.

She wore it to get her right side removed from her breast because, in the words of Sarah Chalke, "she felt like she wanted to be out of context in the sterile operating room, you know, mastectomy, right side," and she didn't want to be treated like any other treatment. She wanted to embody this red lipstick-wearing woman who was going to do it again, but this time on her terms. It served as her war paint. Reliving Lucas' experiences was difficult for Chalke on a personal level. Talking about her family cancer, she said;
I lost both my aunt and my grandmother to breast cancer, both because it was not detected early enough. But it was incredibly difficult since you had to go through all the different stages, including hair loss, wearing various wigs, and filming in actual hospitals and chemotherapy rooms. And returning there was extremely difficult after going through cancer with people I love. For me, that was perhaps the hardest part.
The first episode of Firefly Lane Season 2 ends on a dramatic cliffhanger, as is customary for good Netflix series. Sarah Chalke's character, Kate Malarkey, discovers she has an uncommon and aggressive form of inflammatory breast cancer. She instinctively wants to turn to Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl), her best friend, in this difficult time, but as the first half of Season 2 shows in great detail, they are no longer together.
