‘I Am Not Okay With This’ Showrunner Reveals Netflix Did Not Allow Him to Give Proper Ending to Season One

I Am Not Okay With This Showrunner Jonathan Entwistle reveals he wanted to reshoot a proper ending for the Netflix drama, but the streaming giants were having none of it.

I Am Not Okay With This showrunner Jonathan Entwistle admits Netflix did not allow him to provide season one a proper recut conclusion after the show was canceled.

Based on Charles Forsman‘s 2017 comics of the same name, the comedy-drama series follows Sydney Novak (Sophia Lillis), a 17-year-old girl who learns she possesses supernatural abilities a year after her father took his own life.

Season one saw Sydney explore her newfound talents, all while coping with friendship & family issues, and an unwarranted crush on her best friend.

At the conclusion of the first season, Sydney discovered more about her father’s history, leading to a shocking cliffhanger. After triggering a horrifying incident at homecoming, Sydney is in shock before being approached by a strange man who’s been stalking her all season.

When Sydney questions him about his identity and whether she should be scared of him, he says, “They should be afraid. Let’s begin.”

It was obvious the final scene was supposed to lead into the second season, which viewers anticipated to further explore Sydney’s powers and links to her father, as well as the repercussions of homecoming.

However, in a shocking move, Netflix revealed in August, I Am Not Okay With This will not be renewed for season 2 due to COVID-19 concerns. Now, Entwistle sheds light on the show’s dismissal and the problems that have occurred.

During an interview with Insider, Entwistle explains Netflix wouldn’t let him reshoot the finale of season 1 to avoid making it look like a cliffhanger.

The showrunner goes on to say the finale was supposed to vary from the much darker version of the comic that saw Sydney take her own life.

Entwistle added,

… and we didn’t want it to end like that in the show. And in fact, when the show was canceled, I went back to Netflix and said, ‘Hey, can you let me recut the last two shots so that there’s no dialogue and it just looks like a man appears to her? … but they wouldn’t let me.

Entwistle stated his other Netflix show, The End of the F***ing World, was better off finishing with a single season, but Netflix opted for season 2, which aired two years later. He continued,

Don’t get me started on why we should have just ended it there. I fought very hard to end it there.

Since there is no proper ending to I Am Not Okay With This, fans will now have no choice but to imagine one for themselves.
