Javicia Leslie is a German-born American actress who was raised in Maryland. She started acting from a young age but never would she have thought of playing a black superhero in a TV show. But she is doing exactly that as Ryan Wilder/Batwoman in The CW series Batwoman season 2. The God Friended Me actress was born in Germany while her mother was stationed there. She was brought to Princes Georges County, Maryland where her parents raised her. Her fascination with performance and acting started out with talent shows, later moving on to plays and continuing her training through college.
Javicia started acting professionally soon after college and her first major roles came in 2018 when she appeared as Ali Finer in God Friended Me and Paris Duncan in The Family Business. The actress said her Batwoman is going to be different but she will still remain gay. "I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television. And as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community," she said after her casting.
There is growing talk that Javicia's character Ryan will continue the romance with Kate Kane's ex-girlfriend Sophie Moore. Those two will definitely work together as they attempt to protect the city from tyranny and new villains but romance is almost a certainty.

On the real-life front, there have been some rumors relating to Javicia Leslie's girlfriend. She has been seen vacationing with prospective girlfriends and whenever she has shared pictures with prospective romantic partners there has been some suggestive language used to say they are more than friends.
While this is not confirmed, Javicia Leslie was once rumored to have dated Nigerian-American actress Karen Obilom. Karen was considered to be Javicia's girlfriend and the rumors were further aggravated when Javicia and Karen were seen together in Ghana.

There were also pictures of the duo before their trip to Ghana but the pictures shared during their vacation had comments which resulted in fueling the rumor mill. Javicia has never said Karen is her girlfriend, neither has Karen so we cannot be certain if they are dating until either one confirms the rumors.
Also, there are no other rumors concerning Javicia Leslie's girlfriend. The actress is not shy about sharing her family pictures but when it comes to her personal life, beyond her being gay, Javicia is protective about every information. Batwoman was released in 2019 to accompany other DC properties on The CW. The show featured Ruby Rose as Kate Kane who comes back to Gotham and becomes Batwoman in the absence of Bruce Wayne. The first season saw Ruby tackle the character with varying levels of success and after the conclusion of season 1, she announced her departure.
The actress said she was not going to play the character anymore moving forward. And soon after her departure, Javicia Leslie was announced as taking on the role of Batwoman. But she will not be playing Kate Kane, which is impossible, instead, Javicia will play Ryan Wilder, a drug-runner who lives in her van and runs from the police.
Javicia described the character as "likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed." And Executive Producer Caroline Dries said, "I’m inventing a whole new character who in her past was inspired by Batwoman, so she will take on the mantle and is completely maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun."
