Robert Emms portrayed the character of Leonid Toptunov in the historical drama television series, Chernobyl (2019) airing on HBO. The series tells the real-life story of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that occurred in April 1986. The subsequent cleanup efforts were unprecedented in the entire history.

The actor told Wylde magazine, “What attracted me was that it’s a really amazing story that’s never been told in a drama before. They’re all real people in it, which is another thing that appealed to me. It’s always interesting to play someone who really existed, and the character I play – Leonid Toptunov – was a big part of what happened.”

Robert added that his character along with another colleague was in charge of the control room and they were scheduled to perform a test in the night despite lacking qualification to do so, unlike the day-shift who were fully qualified to do it.

Emms claimed, during the time in a Soviet nation you couldn’t say no to your boss and consequently, you got bullied into doing stuff you couldn’t. Inevitably, the test went south that led to a massive disaster.

The actor revealed he had to spend several hours with full-body prosthetic make-up in a bid to display the precise effects of the severe radiation.
