Stargirl is based on the work of Geoff Johns, who created the character of Stargirl and based it on the life of his young sister, who died in a plane crash. When DC asked him to create a show, the first thing he thought of was Stargirl, and the pitch he gave to Warner Bros. and DC was well received, which resulted in the character getting a green light for production as a live-action series on the new DC Universe.
Stargirl follows Courtney Whitmore, who is a teenager from LA but is forced to move to a small town in Nebraska after her mother marries Pat Dugan. Later Courtney realizes Pat is the former superhero sidekick Stripesy and finds the staff of Starman. Inadvertently she possesses the power of Starman and becomes Stargirl, which forces Pat to come out of retirement and results in Courtney to try to assemble the Justice Society of America.
