Fans Demand Spinning Out Season 2 - Will They Get Their Wish?

The competitive figure skating drama Spinning Out failed to receive season 2 renewal from Netflix, resulting in massive fans backlash. The decision came a month after Spinning Out released on the streaming platform on 1st January 2020.

Although the decision to cancel the show came as a surprise to the fans, it’s consistent with Netflix’s practice of analyzing a month’s worth of data before deciding to renew. As it turns out, the show failed to meet the expected standards despite the immense love from the fans.

Netflix Ice-Skating Drama 'Spinning Out' – What is it About?

Spinning Out stars Kaya Scodelario as Kat Baker, a figure skater and Olympic hopeful, who almost quits the sports following a brutal fall on the ice that nearly ended her life. Her remarkable journey sees her go from the verge of hanging up her skating boots for good to coming out victorious at the sectionals.

The story displays the struggling lifestyle of people with mental illness. Both Kat Baker and her mother Carol Baker (January Jones) struggle in their day to day life with bipolar disorders. Besides mental health, the series touches issues like racism and sexual predators. Moreover, Kat’s post-traumatic stress disorder is heavily addressed.

The most intriguing part of the story involves Kat’s journey back to the sports as a pair skater alongside Justin Davis, played by the dashing Evan Roderick. The rest of the notable cast includes Willow Shields as Serena Baker, Amanda Zhou as Jenn Yu, Sarah Wright Olsen as Mandy Davis, and Kaitlyn Leeb as Leah Starnes.

Spinning Out season one premiered on Netflix on 1st January 2020.

Netflix Cancels 'Spinning Out' After Season One - Fans Launch Petitions and Twitter Trends

Following the depressing news of Netflix canceling the beloved ice skating drama, fans launched a campaign to express their disappointment towards the decision with petitions and Twitter trends.

One of the change.org petition reads,

Many fans would agree, 'Spinning Out' presents many issues we rarely get a glimpse of on TV today. It's refreshing to see such a well-done series on a sport (figure skating), which is most often overlooked in itself while including the raw and intense struggles that can come along with it.

The petition adds,

This show brought awareness to bipolar disorder, depression, sexual assault, racial inequality, the power of the wealthy, cultural stereotypes and so much more. Each episode brought the viewers into the world of not only Kat but the supporting characters as well, who all had so much depth and substance that told a story of their own.

The appeal continues,

Netflix needs to keep shows like 'Spinning Out' going because they truly create a strong and supporting fan base- a community of individuals who will produce continual support for the shows that they connect with and love so deeply.

Victoria Cotaj, the person who started the petition, believes, “Actors Kaya Scodelario and Evan Roderick deserve to continue to tell the story of Kat and Justin that they so immaculately brought to life. With such hard work and dedication on their part (and the part of all the other actors) to bring this incredible story to life, it is a shame to end it improperly. Their story isn’t done yet.”

Cotaj concludes by touching the business side of things. She reckons Spinning Out is definitely worth the money Netflix is investing (if not now, in the long run).

Netflix is fueled by viewership and subscriptions. This is one of those shows that would have and will have had people coming back on to their platform to keep on watching. Netflix NEEDS to listen to the FANS and the VIEWERS. Renew Spinning out for a second season! We pay to watch shows we enjoy!

Spinning Out received mixed reviews with 63% on Rotten Tomatoes and a pretty good 7.8 rating on IMDb.

One of the lead cast members, January Jones, took to her Instagram Story to share her feelings following the sad news. The actress captioned, “Will miss these cuties! Thanks for all the fan support.” Jones’ on-screen daughter, the talented actress Willow Shields then re-posted the same story.

Fans, however, are determined to change the premature ending of this wonderful series. #SaveSpinningOut subsequently trended on Twitter with fans appealing the decision to cancel this brilliant show.

It remains to be seen if the petitions and hashtags become fruitful; however, history certainly isn’t in favor of the figure skating drama. Previously, the devoted fans of Anne With an E did something similar to no avail. The show ultimately remained canceled despite the thousands of signatures, trends on Twitter, and even billboards in real life.

Likewise, Netflix’s romantic musical drama Soundtrack failed to get greenlit for season 2. Unfortunately for the fans of Spinning Out, winning this battle appears to an extremely uphill one. It’s gonna take something truly remarkable for this beautiful show to gain the deserved season 2 with so much yet to explore.
